Module Title: dgt_plat10 – OpenStack Deployment and Operations
Description:
Running OpenStack is a long-term operational commitment: deploying it is only the first day. This module covers the main deployment tools, the day-2 operations that keep a cloud healthy and the practices that make upgrades routine instead of risky. It reuses the Ansible, container and SRE skills from the DevOps, Containers and SRE modules.
Module Objectives:
-
Deployment Tools: Compare Kolla-Ansible (containerized services deployed with Ansible), OpenStack-Ansible, OpenStack-Helm on Kubernetes and distribution-based installers.
-
Reference Architecture: Design a small production layout: controller, network, compute and storage roles, networks for management, tenants, storage and external traffic.
-
Day-2 Operations: Monitoring with Prometheus exporters, centralized logs, backups of the database and configuration, capacity planning.
-
Upgrades: Plan and test release upgrades, use the SLURP cadence and roll back safely.
-
Reliability: Apply SLOs to cloud APIs and instance availability, and run incident drills on control plane failures.
Module Content:
-
All-in-one to multinode: From a single-node lab deployment to a highly available control plane.
-
Configuration as code: Keeping globals.yml, inventories and overrides in Git and deploying them through CI.
-
Ceph integration: Connecting Glance, Cinder and Nova to a Ceph cluster.
-
Common failures: RabbitMQ partitions, Galera quorum loss, stuck volumes and orphaned ports, and how to recover.
-
Security hardening: TLS everywhere, policy files, Keystone federation with an external identity provider.
Hands-on lab in natural language:
On a dedicated lab machine, students ask the AI agent to prepare and run an all-in-one Kolla-Ansible deployment, explaining each configuration choice. Students validate the cloud with the smoke tests from the previous lesson, then simulate the failure of a service and guide the agent through diagnosis and recovery, checking every conclusion it reaches.
Target Audience:
This module is for students who have completed the Linux, DevOps and Containers modules, and for system administrators, DevOps engineers and SREs who want to move towards Platform Engineering. Experience with Kubernetes is recommended.
The students can push their exercises to the Academy DevOps & SRE Git project. For this module, create a folder with your username as its name in the following subfolder: https://github.com/Garanti-Del-Talento/gdt_academy
